Smile

Smile is a movie about two young women, one being Katie, and the other being Lin.
The movie starts out with Lin being found. The man who found her becomes her adoptive father. Later we are shown Katie's 7th birthday. A happy family affair. The second they show Lin's 7th birthday. This is when Lin's fathers wife leaves him because he's basically given up his family for Lin.
Katie is a high end girl living in LA. When her teacher (played by Sean Astin) talks about an organization where students, and nurse's and such can help under privileged children have deformities fixed. Katie ends up going. Lin no longer wants to get the surgery for fear of leaving her home and father. When Katie never sees her she goes and finds her. She coaxes Lin to get the surgery and she does.
This movie is very, very heartfelt and cute, I almost cried on more than one occasion. The characters are so lovable, and the story line made it feel all too short to me. The movie is around an hour and twenty five minutes long. It's such a sweet movie, it was put together well, and the acting wasn't all that bad.
This movie IS on Netflix.com for renting and for instant play.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

My sister and friend Amanda have been trying to get me to watch this movie for a while now so I finally did.
Ace Ventura is a low-rent private eye who specializes in recovering lost animals, so when Snowflake, the Miami Dolphins' aquatic mascot, is kidnapped, team representative Melissa Robinson puts Ace on the case. However, Snowflake isn't the only Miami Dolphin who has gone missing; several key members of the team also disappear, including quarterback Dan Marino, who is spirited away while filming a TV commercial. With the Super Bowl only two weeks away, will Ace be able to find Snowflake and the missing athletes in time to salvage the big game? Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was a surprise box office smash and catapulted manic comedian to stardom.

This movie wasn't as funny as I thought it would be, but I did have a few laughs. Jim Carrey is a little obnoxious (no surprise there) but he does make me smile through out the movie with his noises an odd face movements.
Not a movie for children at all, though there are cute animals, there is also a few sexual scenes.
This movie IS on Netflix.com for renting and for instant play.

The Choir

Woman love him, men love him. Your grandmother loves him (just to keep it going).
So recently I was SO lucky to catch a show on the BBC called, "The Choir". The first episode, thank goodness, was a first episode, and I was hooked.
The show follows a Choir Master by the name of Gareth Malone, on his journey to bring more schools, and more just general people to singing. He travels to schools and towns and builds a choir up from nothing then has them perform.

This show has to be one of my most favourite shows ever. I'll put it at an easy number two. I do however know that a lot of people wont like this show. Some people might even think it gay. I suggest you at least try it out. Totally worth it in my opinion.

This video is what came out of an all-boys school that Gareth visited:

La vie en Rose

This movie is about the legendary Edith Piaf, the French singer. What brought me to this movie was the movie poster, and I'd looked up Marion Cotillard (Big Fish, Inception) on IMDB.

Edith's life is a rocky road, starting with being placed in her father's mother's care at her brothel. A whore there likes to consider herself Edith's mother. Later on, her father returns and takes Edith to work in the circus with him. When he finally leaves the circus he works as a street performer. When asked if Edith has a role in his act he forces her to sing. This causes her to become a singer on the street once she's older. Edith gets seen by many people getting her to sing on stage. Edith falls in love with a boxer named Marcel, and when she rushes him to meet her he dies in a plane crash which starts Edith's drug addiction. She lives a crazy loud life until her end.

The movie can be a little confusing at first. I didn't know anything about it going into it, and later on I understood more just through the movie alone. The movie does these near insane transitions. It starts with Edith as a young girl, than goes on to her as an old woman, then to her as a younger woman, and changes throughout the movie. The movie is completely in French, aside from some lines that are later said in French. However, be aware, this movie is two hours and 15 minutes long. About halfway through you'll probably start to wonder if it's over. Well, it's not. That's the only thing I really didn't love about this movie was how long it was.

This movie IS on Netflix for renting or for instant watch, this is where I watched it.

Not all of the songs are translated into English.

The Road to Perdition (Soundtrack)

I'm a huge OST fan, and I've recently had the pleasure of listening to this soundtrack. This soundtrack was created by Thomas Newman (a fantastic man who has made many, many, many disney movies such as Finding Nemo, Lemony Snickets a series of unfortunate events, and wall-E) for the 2002 movie about a hitman who's son witnesses what he does for a living.
I haven't seen the movie but the soundtrack makes me want to.
The soundtrack has some more melancholy songs, ranging with piano's to strings. There are several more upbeat songs, but my favourites happen to be the more sad sounding one's.
Songs to look out for would be:
Ghost
Road to Perdition
and The Farm

The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

So my sister has been trying so hard to get me to watch this movie and we finally did the other night.
So the story is about a girl named Christine. Christine's father died and she now works in an opera house. When the main character finally quits Madame Giry (the dance director and main awesome character) suggests Christine, and Christine gets the part. Later we find out that the "angel" that was coaching Christine's singing is actually the Phantom who "haunts" the opera house. The Phantom has an obsession with Christine. Earlier in the movie we're introduced to a man named Raoul. Christine had known Raoul at a young age, and when Christine was singing on stage Raoul recognizes her and they rekindle their love. In the end Christine chooses the Phantom so that he will not kill Raoul, but the Phantom, loving Christine lets them both go.
This movie was quite fantastic. I'm not a big fan of musicals anyway, and this one was a few lines too much to be an opera. The music was lovely, and the mains were fantastic picks. I love the transition from flash forwards to the past. I have to say that in the beginning, and in a few other parts of the movie, the music sounded a bit like a Michael Jackson song.
In case you are wondering as I did, yes! The movie is based on a French novel by Gaston Leroux.

The Blind Side Directed by: John Lee Hancock

"The Blind Side" depicts the story of Michael Oher, a homeless African-American youngster from a broken home, taken in by the Touhys, a well-to-do white family who help him fulfill his potential. At the same time, Oher's presence in the Touhys' lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own. Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. As a football player and student, Oher works hard and, with the help of his coaches and adopted family, becomes an All-American offensive left tackle.

I'd rate this a PG-13, it does have a bit of older content in it.
I absolutely adore this movie! It was touching, and a true job well done! Sandra Bullock played Leah Anne quite well, and brought a whole new life to the character, same as Quinton Aaron. Lily Collins also did well in her act considering she is a fairly new actress. Overall it's a fantastic movie and cannot wait to buy it on DVD!
